The “standard” would be to use an 8 weight line with an 8 weight rod (always match your rod and line together). That said – there are a few variables to consider when choosing line weight. 1. Size of fly to be used. 2. Wind conditions. Larger fly, larger rod/line – smaller flies #6 or 4, maybe a 6 weight, #2 or so, 8 weight, 1/0, 9 or 10 wt. Heavy wind, heavier line size.
Hope this helps – Experience and casting ability are also variables –

A few months ago, I dropped you a line asking where I might find a copy of Brooks’ Bass Bug Fishing. You directed me to Alibris where I found a copy. Great read and good place to start for the neophyte bass bug fisherman. I then followed up with several other books on the recommend list. I obtained the proper rods and gear and went fishing. I caught several good fish on bugs this year (the best slightly over four pounds). Thanks for the help.
Bass buggin and fly rodding for bass generally can really get in your blood.
